Terra Quartet: Rising Stars of Chamber Music | Naumburg Competition 2025 Winners (2026)

The world of chamber music has a new rising star! The Terra Quartet has just conquered the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Competition, held in the heart of New York City.

But first, let's set the scene...

On December 8th and 9th, 2025, the Morgan Library and Museum played host to a thrilling musical showdown. Three exceptional ensembles—Terra Quartet, Trio Eris, and Kodachrome Saxophone Quartet—battled it out in the final round, leaving the judges with a challenging decision.

And the winner is... Terra Quartet! This talented ensemble emerged victorious, claiming the top prize of $15,000, along with a series of prestigious performance opportunities. But wait, there's more! The quartet also won the chance to have a new work commissioned for them and to record this unique piece.

The jury, a panel of esteemed musicians including David Geber and Charles Neidich, was impressed by the quartet's exceptional talent. The Terra Quartet's lineup features violinists Harriet Langley and Amelia Dietrich, violist Chih-Ta Chen, and cellist Audrey Chen. These musicians have already made waves in the classical music world, having recently placed second in both the Bordeaux and Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competitions in 2025.

But this isn't their first rodeo. The group has a history of success, having taken home the grand prize and gold medal at the 2022 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the Christine and David Anderson Career Development Prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition in the same year.

And this is where it gets even more impressive...

The Terra Quartet's journey continued in 2023 with a second-place finish at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and a third-place finish at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. Currently, they hold the esteemed position of fellowship quartet-in-residence at Yale University, a testament to their artistic excellence.

The ensemble also served as the Ernst Stiefel quartet-in-residence at Caramoor Center for Music and Arts in 2024-25, curating programs focused on the works of Benjamin Britten. And if that wasn't enough, they were also the Project Music Heals Us Arts Leadership Ensemble in 2023-24.

The Naumburg Competition, facilitated by the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation, is an annual event that alternates between various disciplines, including violin, chamber music, cello, piano, and saxophone. The competition has a rich history of discovering exceptional talent, with the Merz Trio taking home the top prize in the 2021 chamber music edition.

Mark your calendars for the 2026 edition, which will showcase the finest violinists from around the globe, from October 27th to November 1st.

Congratulations to the Terra Quartet on their remarkable achievement! Their journey is a testament to the power of hard work and dedication in the pursuit of musical excellence. But here's a thought—what do you think makes a chamber music ensemble truly exceptional? Is it technical prowess, emotional depth, or perhaps something else entirely? Share your thoughts below, and let's spark a conversation about the art of chamber music!
