Skeet Ulrich Unveils the Secret Endgame of the 'Scream' Reboots
The iconic 'Scream' franchise, known for its chilling slasher films, returned with a legacy sequel in 2022, followed by a second installment in 2023. The original cast, including Skeet Ulrich, was set to reprise their roles, but plans changed dramatically due to unforeseen circumstances. Skeet Ulrich, who played the original Ghostface, revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the franchise had a grand vision for the Carpenter sisters, particularly Sam (Melissa Barrera).
According to Ulrich, the original plan was a 'three-picture arc' where Sam would be haunted by visions of her character, Billy Loomis, and eventually become a Ghostface herself. This was hinted at in the previous films when Sam killed one of the Ghostfaces in each installment. The final scene of Scream 6, where Sam looks at the Ghostface mask before dropping it, could be interpreted as her leaving her dark past behind or preparing to embrace it fully in a potential sequel. However, these plans were abruptly halted due to a controversial decision.
Melissa Barrera, who played Sam, was fired by franchise owner Spyglass in 2023 after she voiced her support for Palestinians during the Israel-Gaza conflict. This led to the departure of Jenna Ortega and Christopher Landon, who took over directing duties after Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin left to work on 'Abigail'. The franchise's future took an unexpected turn, and the original vision for the Carpenter sisters was no more.
Despite the changes, the 'Scream' franchise continues with 'Scream 7', directed by Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first and fourth films. Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescott, alongside fellow franchise alums Courtney Cox, Mason Gooding, Jasmine Savoy Brown, and Matthew Lillard. The film is set to release on February 27, 2026. Skeet Ulrich, however, will not be returning to the franchise, and he has no knowledge of the new direction it is taking.
