Get ready for some Olympic hockey action! The first test game at the Milan-Cortina Olympic hockey rink has players buzzing, but it's not without its challenges.
A Work in Progress
The inaugural match at Santagiulia Arena faced a five-minute delay due to a hole in the ice, but the players who took to the ice that night had positive things to say about the conditions.
Tommaso Terzago, a forward for Varese Hockey, noted that the ice improved as the game progressed. "I felt more confident in the second and third periods," he said. "Initially, I had a close call with a hole, but they fixed it promptly."
Florian Wieser of SV Kaltern/Caldaro added, "It's a work in progress, but the ice was decent. I believe it will be ready for the NHLers."
This feedback is especially encouraging given the concerns about construction delays and the upcoming Olympics.
A Global Interest
The construction status of Santagiulia Arena has captured the attention of hockey enthusiasts worldwide. Wieser's social media posts from inside the arena went viral, with one video reaching over 8 million views!
"I wanted to share a glimpse of what it's like inside," Wieser explained. "Little did I know it would go crazy!"
With 24 out of 30 men's games and 8 women's games scheduled at Santagiulia, it's no wonder everyone is watching closely.
A Race Against Time
While the secondary Rho Arena is ready for action, Santagiulia still has a long way to go. A crew of 2,500 has been working tirelessly to finish the main rink, but challenges remain.
The expected capacity has been reduced from 14,012 to 11,800, and only four dressing rooms are complete. The exterior of the building is far from sealed, with gaps exposing the arena to the elements.
"It's a mess outside," observed Raphaël Bastille, the lone Canadian player on either team. "But inside, it's almost done."
A Unique Experience
The players who participated in the first game at Santagiulia described the experience as thrilling, despite the smaller-than-usual neutral zone and the narrower ice surface.
"It was an honor to be part of this historic moment," Terzago said. "The fans were incredible, and it was a privilege to play in such a grand arena."
Varese and Kaltern/Caldaro, who play in smaller arenas, relished the opportunity to showcase their skills on a bigger stage.
A Controversial Twist?
But here's where it gets interesting: the International Ice Hockey Federation approved rink dimensions that are over 3 feet shorter than the standard NHL length. Will this impact the flow of the game? And will the construction be completed in time for the Olympics?
