Boldly, it has come to light that mouse droppings were discovered in the children's play area of a health and leisure club located in Derby. This alarming finding was revealed by inspectors following a thorough examination of the facility.
The comprehensive food hygiene report stems from an inspection conducted at David Lloyd Health Club in Pride Park, Derby, back in October. The purpose of this inspection was to address complaints regarding pest activity at the venue, and the findings confirmed the presence of rodents.
According to the report published by Derby City Council, there were signs of rodent activity not only in the children’s play area but also in several crucial areas of the establishment, including the service counter, restaurant, and reception area. Inspectors highlighted that such conditions "pose a risk to the public," raising significant concerns about health and safety standards within the facility.
Before the inspection, the club had engaged a pest control contractor; however, inspectors deemed their efforts ineffective due to inadequate pest-proofing throughout the premises. They noted serious structural issues with the building itself, mentioning, "I believe that there is a significant issue within the structure of the building, and numerous gaps and holes were noted throughout the structure and fittings, which provide access and harborage points for pests to move throughout the premises."
These vulnerabilities included both high-level access from the ceiling and low-level entry points through various fittings like the servery counter and upholstered furniture. Inspectors documented smear marks on the backs of refrigerators and along low-level utility piping behind the service counter, as well as high-level openings identified in the children’s play area.
In light of these findings, the report urged the business to take "all reasonable precautions" to avert future pest infestations, particularly concerning rats and mice. While it acknowledged that the overall cleanliness of the club was "visibly good," it pointed out that mouse droppings and smear marks were present in some hard-to-reach locations, such as the reception desk, where cleaning standards were notably lacking.
The inspectors declared, "This is unacceptable. You must now clean the premises thoroughly and implement robust controls to ensure that cleaning standards do not fail again. I remind you that as a business owner, it is your responsibility to ensure your food safety management system is adequate, fully documented, that staff are suitably trained, and that the controls are thoroughly implemented at all times."
To address these serious concerns, the report included three key recommendations:
- It strongly urged the establishment to adopt a rigorous cleaning schedule.
- It recommended that any damage should be monitored and reported immediately to prevent pest access.
- It advised management to carry out regular audits to ensure that standards remain consistently high moving forward.
A spokesperson for David Lloyd Health Clubs stated, "At David Lloyd Clubs, we take health and hygiene extremely seriously. Since their inspection in October last year, we have been working with the Environmental Health Authority. All actions have been completed, and we are now awaiting a reassessment of the facility."
They concluded by reassuring members that any lapses in standards are taken with the utmost seriousness and that measures have been instituted to prevent a recurrence of such issues.
