FSU 2026 Signing Class: Legacy Players Bring Garnet & Gold Back to Tallahassee (2026)

A Legacy of Garnet and Gold: Florida State's 2026 Signing Class

In the world of college football recruiting, Florida State University (FSU) has a unique advantage - a deep pool of talent with a personal connection to the school. The 2026 signing class is a testament to this, with a significant number of players who can proudly claim FSU's garnet and gold runs in their veins.

The Legacy Group

Three standout athletes in the 2026 class are the sons of former FSU football players, and they're following in their fathers' footsteps. Four-star receiver Devin Carter, three-star tight end Corbyn Fordham, and three-star offensive lineman Michael Ionata are all set to don the Seminole uniform, continuing a legacy that began with their dads.

But here's where it gets interesting: this isn't just a one-off occurrence. Head Coach Mike Norvel has navigated similar situations throughout his tenure. This past season, he welcomed USC transfer Duce Robinson (son of Dominic) and true freshman defensive back AJ Cromartie (son of Antonio). However, the 2026 class is certainly the largest legacy group FSU has signed under Norvel's leadership, and it might just be one of the biggest legacy signing classes in college football history.

A Delicate Balance

Recruiting these players is a delicate dance for Norvel. He emphasizes that while legacy is important, it's not the sole factor. These athletes must earn their spot based on their skills and how they fit into the team's needs. "They have to prove themselves worthy. Just because their dad played here doesn't guarantee them a spot. We have to find the right fit for the program and for the player," Norvel explains.

The recruitment process for these legacy players was unique, with some stories standing out more than others. Take Devin Carter, for example. Norvel recalls meeting him as an eighth-grader at one of FSU's football camps. Young Devin already had aspirations of following in his father's footsteps, and his journey to FSU has been an interesting one. After initially committing to Florida State in 2023, he decommitted and then committed to Auburn before ultimately returning to the Seminoles. Norvel believes Carter's legacy and talent will make him a key player for FSU.

Joey Ionata, Michael's father, played 39 games on FSU's offensive line, earning All-American honors in his final season. While his older son chose Alabama, Michael felt the pull of Tallahassee. Similarly, Todd Fordham, Corbyn's father, played 33 games on FSU's offensive line, and although his older son chose NC State, Corbyn felt the call to become a Seminole.

A Special Connection

Norvel believes that when a player's passion for FSU aligns with the team's needs, something special can happen. "When a player has that lifelong connection to the school and it's the right fit, it's a powerful combination. They're not just fans; they're part of the family. I'm grateful that our paths crossed and that it worked out for both sides," Norvel said.

The 2026 signing class also includes two brothers of current Seminoles. Three-star receiver Jonah Winston, brother of Jameis, and three-star linebacker Noah LaVallee, brother of Caleb, are both joining the team. For Winston especially, there's an added layer of celebrity status in Tallahassee due to his brother's achievements.

And this is the part most people miss: while these players have a unique connection to FSU, they're here because Norvel believes in their talent and potential. It's a testament to the power of legacy and the promise of future success.
