A Taste of Family: How Love for Food Inspired Alan Wong's Chinese Restaurant in Fresno
In the heart of Fresno, a new Chinese restaurant has opened its doors, carrying the legacy of a family's love for food and hospitality. Alan Wong, a third-generation chef, draws from his childhood memories of helping his parents in their restaurant kitchen to create a unique dining experience. "My friends were playing outside, while I was in the kitchen, my little fingers covered in snow peas, jabbing myself with shrimp spines," Alan recalled with a laugh. "It was a miserable job, but those memories are etched in my mind."
Today, Alan's dedication to the culinary arts is evident in his first restaurant, Dragon Wok. This fast-casual eatery, located in the former Wassabi restaurant space, offers a modern twist on traditional Chinese cuisine. His parents, originally from China, moved to the United States and established a successful restaurant empire in Fresno's smaller cities. They owned and operated New China Cafe in Reedley, China Garden in Kingsburg, and the China Garden buffet in Selma, with Alan's parents working at the latter for the longest period. Alan's involvement with the China Garden in Selma allowed him to gain a comprehensive understanding of restaurant management, and his further education at a culinary school in the Bay Area gave him the confidence to venture out on his own.
Dragon Wok has quickly gained popularity, earning a 4.8-star rating on Yelp with 31 reviews. Customers praise the restaurant's ability to evoke the cozy atmosphere of a mom-and-pop Chinese place, with generous portions, reasonable prices, and delicious food.
