Major news in the football world! Tottenham Hotspur has just secured the signing of midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, in a deal worth a cool £34 million. This move is set to shake up the Premier League, but it almost didn't happen.
Aston Villa also showed strong interest in Gallagher, hoping for an initial loan with an option to buy. However, Atletico Madrid wasn't keen on anything less than a mandatory purchase.
Spurs' urgency in securing Gallagher stems from a significant setback. Rodrigo Bentancur's hamstring injury will sideline him for most of the season. This situation created a need for a dynamic midfielder, and Gallagher fits the bill perfectly. He's signed a long-term contract, committing to the club for five and a half years.
Gallagher expressed his excitement, stating, "I'm so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club." He added, "I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same. It was very easy, it happened very quickly and I'm ready to get on the pitch. But here's where it gets interesting... Gallagher, who is 25 years old, joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024 for around £38 million. His Premier League experience is extensive, with 136 appearances for clubs like West Brom, Crystal Palace, and Chelsea.
The announcement of Bentancur's injury came on Tuesday, following surgery on his right hamstring.
In other transfer news, no current member of Thomas Frank's first-team squad is expected to leave the club. However, there's been interest in Mathys Tel from Paris FC and Radu Dragusin from Roma, but they remain part of Frank's plans.
Spurs are also on the verge of finalizing a £13 million deal for Santos left-back Souza, a 19-year-old player, who will provide cover and competition for Destiny Udogie.
