Algal Bloom Update: Positive Results Ahead of Summer (2026)

South Australia's algal bloom monitoring has revealed some positive signs as the state braces for peak summer temperatures. Marine scientist Mike Steer expressed optimism, stating that the latest results are 'fantastic timing' ahead of the summer peak. The news comes as a relief after the region experienced high levels of chlorophyll A and millions of algal cells in mid-October, leading to concerns about the persistence of Karenia species and the resulting dead fish washing up on the metropolitan coast. However, the latest data shows a significant improvement, with all 21 metropolitan testing sites recording no or low levels of Karenia species. While some residual elevated counts were detected offshore, they were described as relatively moderate. Zero levels were recorded at nine metropolitan sites, including Port River St Kilda Boat Ramp, West Lakes Exit, Henley Beach Jetty, Glenelg Jetty, and O'Sullivan Beach Boat Ramp. The remaining metropolitan sites recorded levels ranging from 100 to 6,000 cells per litre. Additionally, zero or low levels of Karenia were detected across Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, and the Fleurieu Peninsula. Professor Steer noted a decrease in fish kills, particularly in the last week, and attributed this to the dominance of Leatherjackets subsiding. The marine scientist also highlighted that authorities are starting to see Karenia species being overtaken by other species, indicating a potential rebalancing of the ecosystem. When asked about swimming concerns, Steer assured that swimmers should not be worried, as the water is 'perfectly clear'. However, he emphasized that other species are still being monitored, and caution is advised, especially as the upwelling season approaches in early January, February, and March. Despite the positive signs, beachgoers like Annette Abilmouna and Phillip Freeman expressed relief and enjoyment at the improved water quality. However, Veronica Vuong still expressed cautious optimism, acknowledging the progress but remaining vigilant. The controversy and differing opinions arise from the varying levels of concern among beachgoers, with some feeling more confident in the water's safety and others remaining cautious. The question remains: how can we effectively communicate the risks and benefits to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all beachgoers?
