The Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan advised the gallery in late 2023 that the boiler plant would require 24/7 supervision without an upgrade. This constant supervision costs the gallery about $150,000 a year. The boilers' lifespan has been shortened due to their constant operation, unlike other heating systems in city buildings that operate seasonally and offer maintenance opportunities during shutdowns. The Remai Modern art gallery's unique status in North America may contribute to the need for such frequent maintenance. The city administration is not surprised by the need to replace the boilers, and the funds will come from a reserve fund intended for upgrades. The gallery's admission policy is also changing, switching to by-donation admission starting Saturday. This move may be a response to the financial challenges posed by the boiler replacement and other maintenance needs.
